Overview Residential Commercial & Institutional Training & Consulting Product Descriptions
SolSource provides a wide range of solar electric (photovoltaic), solar heating and solar thermal systems. The firm services residential, commercial, and institutional customers.
Solar (Photovoltaic) Systems
With growing concern over climate change, rising energy prices, and the uncertain dependability of conventional fuel sources, the value of solar electric systems is growing. Solar electric photovoltaic (PV) systems address all of these concerns and use less energy than fossil fuels to provide clean and reliable electricity. With increasing demand, state rebates and advances in technology, PV systems are now more affordable than ever. As a distributed source of power, solar electric systems are easy to install and require little maintenance.
Our systems are architecturally integrated into new homes, taking into account the best sun angle, pitch of the roof and local aesthetics.
SolSource designs and installs three types of systems. These include Grid-Tied, Grid-Tied w/ Battery Backup and Off-Grid Systems.
top
Grid-Tied
A grid-tied PV system's output is directly linked through your meter to the utility distribution lines that normally provides you with electricity. In this way, the grid effectively "stores" any excess power produced by your PV system, and supplements power when your demand for electricity is greater than the kW's your PV system produces. The electricity produced by your PV system comes in at the exact same voltage and quality as that from your utility provider.
You can choose to install a grid-tied PV system with batteries that will both allow you to send excess power to the grid, while also providing backup power for your critical loads in the case of a power outage.
With a grid-tied system, the inverter is designed to shut off when the grid does. This keeps the PV-generated electricity off the grid in case there are utility people working on it. Grid-tied systems are the least expensive and the least complicated type of PV system. Their main disadvantage is that the loss of utility power causes the solar electric system to shut down.
top
Grid-Tied with Battery Backup
This type of system still takes advantage of available utility power, but offers protection from blackouts, ice storms and other outages. When utility power is lost, a bank of batteries supplies power to critical loads such as the refrigerator, furnace, well pump and computer. For homeowners or businesses wanting to be completely self-reliant or who cannot tolerate possible power outages, a battery backup or uninterruptible power system is the best insurance.
top
Off-Grid Systems
In an Off-Grid situation, the PV system is the main source of electrical power. At night and during cloudy days battery power and/or a generator is used to power the home/building. These systems are more expensive to design and install and typically only make sense where utility power is unavailable.

Solar Thermal
EnerWorks, a Canadian company, manufactures a state-of-the-art Solar Water Heating System. The system acts as the primary source for your family's hot water, while your existing electric, natural gas, propane or oil hot water heating functions as an auxiliary heating source. The system heats cold water to hot water tap temperature (usually 120 degrees Fahrenheit).
EnerWorks' product offers several benefits. It cuts hot water heating costs by half or more, reduces the impact of rising electricity and natural gas prices and offers cost competitive and environmentally friendly energy.
The EnerWorks' system is dependable, does not affect how you use your hot water and it requires little maintenance. Solar energy, in the form of heat, is collected by solar absorbers mounted on a roof, fence, or the ground and transferred through a heat exchanger to your potable hot water. The system works in all seasons and is designed to reduce, not replace, your existing fossil fuel hot water source.
The EnerWorks Solar Water Heating Appliance requires minimal service every 3 years and has an expected lifespan of over 20 years. One, two or three solar absorbers, (4 ft. x 8 ft. x 3 in.) resembling thin skylights, are mounted on your roof, fence, or a ground mounted rack. A flexible fluid line runs from the roof to the hot water tank(s). Homeowners with natural gas or propane hot water tanks, or families with heavy hot water use will require a two-tank installation for extra hot water storage. Next to space heating, hot water heating is the largest single user of home energy.
The EnerWorks Solar Hot Water Appliances are the first of a range of solar thermal products, SolSource plans to offer. Additional products will include: solar assisted heat pumps and solar space and pool heating solar hot water systems scaled to meet the needs of suich commercial facilities as food service, hospitality, multi family accommodation, car washes, community pools, laundries, dairy farms, industrial processes and government buildings.

Solar Attic Fan
The Solar Attic Fan from Natural Light is a simple and environmentally sensible solution that can save both homeowners and commercial facilities money. Powered completely by free solar energy, this sleek and efficient vent is both compact and quiet. Fully operational right from the box, it installs easily, with no electrical wiring, no expensive electrician and city permits. Units come in 10 and 20watt sizes. The 10-watt unit can fully vent up to 1,200 square feet, operating at up to 850 cfms. The Fan can be placed in a range of locations; attics, lofts, workshops, storage sheds, garages, dormers, even barns. The Fan comes with a 25 year warranty on the housing unit, 15 years on the PV module and 5 years on the motor.
Attic venting is an important aspect in maintaining a healthy energy efficient home. Proper venting cools your roof extending the material life and reduces the load on your air conditioning system. Attic venting also increases fresh air circulation which reduces vapor build up generated by every day activities like showering and cooking.

Solarsheat
The line of Solarsheat products (1500G and 1500GS) use the sun to provide space heating for small to medium-sized room heating and/or ventilation needs. The Solarsheat products can be mounted on the outside of a south facing wall or roof. The sun heats up a Solarsheat air collector like the sun warms your car on a sunny day.
Both Solarsheat air collectors use inside air and heats it up to higher temperatures, and dumps it back into the house. The 1500GS is considered a "secondary" solar collector, with no moving parts. It was designed to add power to a 1500G or to be connected to other 1500GS's.
The Solarsheat 1500G uses a self-powered fan, which is built into it with a solar electric panel. It's designed to be installed very quickly. It can be installed in 1 hour on a south facing wall. The 1500G is a glazed recirculation solar air collector designed for space heating applications. Air is drawn from inside the room through the bottom of the collector and blown out through a duct in the top. The unit is self-powered, with no electrical hook-up required.
One Solarsheat 1500G or 1500GS provides supplementary heating for a room up to 1000 square feet (in a well-insulated house, in northern US, or southern Canadian climates). Payback is estimated at 6 years.
